Two years ago today we said Farewell...

I had forgotten about the video we took when we were dropping off Spencer to the Missionary Training Center in Provo Utah...this is when he officially got his missionary tag and I was privilaged to put it on him for the first time. Looking at this today, I realize how nervous and anxious he seemed...in a few days he will be home; A changed and confident man. I am so proud he was willing to go into the unknown and trust in the Lord! We have all been so blessed since this day two long years ago.

An update from Spencer!!!

Well this last week was very good! I had a TON of miracles happen.. its been quite amazing. This week we committed 12 people to baptism just right on the streets! It was awesome and helped us out too. Now we have 4 baptismal dates with Giovanni on the way for his own this week. We found a really neat family named the Ocampos. They have a lot of potential. We set up a date with the oldest son whose name is Eli, it looks promising. We also have been working with some other families and yeah the work is going! We have been pretty low on our allotment of car miles so we had to walk a lot this last week. We had a lot of contacting going and ran into a lot of different people. One guy, who was drunk, got down on his knees and started asking me for forgiveness! I told him, " I can't forgive you only God can. " It was pretty sad though.. The world cup is going on now too and, being here, its a pretty big deal. a lot of people became sad at the news that Mexico lost so that was an interesting day. Soccer of course is huge here. I have actually started to like it too myself! haha weird I know. anyway Thursday was a pretty emotional day. It was Zone conference so I was able to give my "final" testimony there. I cried the whole time explaining how I couldn't believe I was standing in front of them all! I still cant believe I don't have much time left.. I don't feel it at all! Alright so for the miracles; I couldn't believe it, but last Sunday I was able to perform the baptism of one of my investigators whom I worked so hard with: Jxxx Duran. yeah I couldn't believe it! For 8 months did I struggle with this guy and his alcohol addiction, but he overcame it and was able to be baptized... and like I said he gave me the honor of performing it... I tell you that was one of the happiest moments of my life (and reliefs haha) it was awesome. After he came out of the water I was able to embrace him.. the Spirit was strong. As well, earlier that Sunday we had stake conference and to my surprise an investigator whom I thought would never ever be interested in what we have, called us up in the morning to tell us he was going to church! His name was Lou and let me tell you if you saw him, you wouldn't believe he came to church. He is trying to get over some addictions right now, he had tattoos all over him, and he swears quite a bit, but he came. The most surprising thing about it was at 4 am he woke up thinking of me! I guess my testimony and the hope I have had for this guy got to him and he explained that it was "Your God telling me to come to church" haha he loved it though. I guess you never know who will accept your testimony.. I have a lot of hope for him. anyway it was a good week :)

Isn't he wonderful!  I just love that boy!!!  I have been praying my heart out that he will enjoy these last few weeks and be able to accomplish the desires of his heart.  He so loves the gospel and the people he is serving.  I am so grateful for his willing and faithful spirit.  He is a wonderful example to us all.  See you soon son!

A new letter from Spencer!

Hey mom how’s it going? I hope all is well!

Well, this week things have gotten a lot better! Tuesday we had a good lesson with two new investigators named David and Liz. They live right next to some other recent converts that we have. We had a very good 1st lesson with them and set a baptismal date on the 18th! Now before you get to exited they have a lot of work to do… (not to mention getting them to come to church.) They gave us rides to general conference; because in our zone we are having a "car fast", however they didn’t come in and listen with us ha-ha.) Were gonna help them as much as we can and I’m exited! Also we are teaching another guy named Josh who we had a cool experience finding. We were going to tract around a fallen through appointment when a guy mowing his lawn came up to us and started talking to us. He said he knew we were mormons and he knew of all the good work we do around the world. Then he referred us to talk to a certain man who lived on that block. He didn’t really want to hear us out, but he had very high respect for us anyway. Well we go over to knock on the door that the man referred us to, and nobody answers..that was a little disappointing but we continued to tract anyway. The next door we knocked at a woman looked outside the window, shook her head and didn’t answer ha-ha ; pretty typical. Well, after that we saw a young man biking to the house that was referred to us just a little while earlier. He went in the house and upon going in my companion said let’s go knock it... reluctantly I decided to do it with him. So we knocked it and the young man answered! We were able to talk to him and he gave us his number to call anytime we wanted to meet with him. It was so cool to be a part of this miracle. The Lord prepared the field well in this case :). Anyway Josh went to one session of conference and were going to call him today to set up another time to visit him. We also just yesterday found another young man named Steven who came up to US and said that he FELT he needed to talk to us :) We have an appointment with him on Tuesday. So things are going! Slow, but going ha-ha. Friday we had zone conference.. it was ok... not really too special. I just didnt feel it at all in this last zone conference, but i did love General Conference!! It really seemed like the Brethren focused a lot on family which is good. Anyway that was great.

I just miss him...I can't believe he is going to be 21 in a few weeks! He also told Jeff that he felt the earthquake a few days ago. Yikes! He has just about 14 weeks left on his mission! We can't wait to see him!

Hey mom!

Hey I'm glad to hear everything is going well with Faith! that's awesome that she fits just right in :).

Well my week was awesome an absolutely amazing way to end the transfer. we just had a lot happen. first off, We FINALLY had our baptisms this Sunday. it took 12 weeks, but we got them haha. its hard to explain the feelings i had when the Zayes family was finally baptized. it was relief, joy, and utter contentment. those were by far the hardest baptisms i have had in my mission. i also had the opportunity to baptize them both and that was just awesome. we completed a family in the gospel. This week was just super successful. we ended up having 7 investigators at church and 5 more baptismal dates. ON top of that we had another 5 or so less actives come to church with one of them starting to prepare for a mission. Ahh the fruits of your labor haha. Really its been all the Lord. if you were to see me these last 6 weeks you would have been like "how in the world did that guy do all that?" haha there is no way that we were alone. the Lord truly guided us to where we are now. this area has truly changed from absolutely nothing to having a lot of potential to just explode and it is starting.. its been rewarding, but very hard at the same time. many tears were shed, many headaches were obtained, but all in all i am extremely pleased at the fruit which we have born.. its awesome! Now for the surprising news: After all that hard work to get this area going, we have just found out that the area is getting split... And i don't know whats happening with us for transfers... i honestly cant believe it, but that's whats happening! i have no idea whats going on for transfers neither do i know where i am going, but it should be an adventure just like always :)

Ok mom i also have a little bit of bad news and this was all my fault... when i was baptizing i had my camera in my pocket, and i accidentally baptized my camera. the memory card is still ok and i will send it to you today, but the camera is man down right now... hopefully it can recuperate, but sorry...

An Update from Spencer!

Hey mom hows it going?

Well wow... this week was SUPER intense, but it has probably been one of the greatest weeks I have had for a while. It's been pouring for the last two days! The streets were absolutely flooded this morning it was awesome haha. On top of that, our numbers were soaring! we had 4 people at church and now we have 5 baptismal dates! I knew the Lord could work a miracle in our area if we just kept strong. He has worked a great deal of miracles :). Of course they haven't just come. They have taken a lot of work and headaches haha. Luckily things are looking really up for us. We have started to teach another family (or couple) who is older named the Dias family. They are turning out to be really good! we set a baptismal date with them last week and they came to church this week! They are doing awesome. Their son, Cesar, is a convert to the church, but is less active. However, our plan is to have him come back to church (he came last week), receive the Aaronic priesthood, then baptize his parents. Pray that this works out! Another thing that's quite a miracle is Jose told us that he wanted to get baptized this week!! We worked with him quite a bit concerning prophets and why we needed them. We watched the Joseph Smith movie and as well Special Witnesses of Christ, and now he has a testimony of them. Now all we need to do is help him not drink anymore haha, but we can do that! So we gotta put everything in order for his baptism this Sunday. Last, but certainly not least we have my new family, the familia Zayes... its been really intense with them, but guess what is happening with them this Saturday?? THEY ARE GETTING MARRIED!!!! How exiting is that! It was a lot of work though. Words can't express how much work it was. We had to calm the doubts of the esposo (husband?), We had to do a lot of legal work concerning the marriage (which, by the way I had to be the translator for), we had to gather enough money to actually perform the wedding, and we had to make plans to marry them by Saturday (which, after much craziness, we found out that it was the only day the bishop could perform it). It was intense and, trust me, I don't EVER want to plan a marriage for anyone again haha, but the worth of soul is too great to ignore so we did it... whew. haha. They will be baptized next week. I'm sooo exited for them!!!!! Wow so what a week haha. Let me tell you I have been humbled by this experience. I have reached a new level of understanding concerning the grace of Christ and ill tell you what ; truly we receive His grace after ALL we can do. I have seen this time and time again. Many times I wondered to myself "Why am I not having success?? Am I working with all I've got.. where are the elect?" But I have come to realize that if the Lord just gave them to me, then what would I have learned? How appreciative would I have been for them? not too much... I am so grateful for the lessons learned... I have just grown so much training, being flushed in, and just working until I have absolutely nothing left. its been a sanctification...

Hi Mom,
Alright well this week has been full of changes! Wednesday I got my training to be a trainer (haha) and, after much await the trainees have arrived! I got Elder Weir as my trainee. He is pretty awesome. Reminds me a lot of when I was first coming out on the mission: scared to talk to people, but determined to do the whole mission thing right haha. Its been stressful and great to train. Now I have to watch EVERY little move I make because if I do anything wrong, he's sees that example, so Ive been on my toes for the past couple of days now. As well, I have to get him talking now! haha I can now feel the pain of my trainer as he had to talk to every single person and dominate the lessons until I could get my feet wet. The new area I'm in is called Wilmington. Its just a little east actually of my first area! I actually cover some of the wards I covered in my first area and its pretty neat. I see all these people I knew in my first area and yeah its definitely a different experience. Its almost ironic that I kinda know where I'm at, but it just feels so different. haha. When we came in we had just about no work left for us... I don't know what the missionaries did before us, but we have a lot of catching up to do. On top of that my companion and I have not really had a normal day. Friday I got caught by Diarrhea bad haha... the whole morning i just sat basically on the toilet. It stunk, but then I asked my greenie for a blessing and miraculously right after the blessing I was healed. I thought that was an amazing experience. Then after that our shower broke! It has been gushing out water for the past 24 hours until a plumber came (today actually) and fixed it haha... yeah its been a crazy first couple of days for my greenie. However despite all the crazy things that have been happening we have been seeing miracles here too. We've actually been working so hard that we haven't eaten a real dinner yet haha. Its been great to work as hard as I can. We have already in this area set a baptismal date with someone, we found some good investigators, and we have a couple part-member families that were working with too. Its great! Really, everything is going well and I'm loving it! It really seems like this area has been somewhat neglected (no baptisms for the past 5 months) and Satan has some grip here, but were gonna kick him out and get some baptisms here. that's for sure!

Thanks for your letter! It was good to hear from you! Sounds like all is going pretty good so far!

So i got my package! Thanks!! It was so good to finally have my patriarchal blessing... those things are powerful, and yeah I also did recieve my baptismal pants which were good to have as well. Now when i need to baptize someone I dont need to borrow someone elses haha. so did you get my letter and the pictures? I think you will enjoy them.

Sounds like you had a great weekend! Haha im happy to hear you got so many deals on clothes and stuff haha. And no worries I will definately keep praying for Faith and you and everyone else. The Lord definately has His hand in this adoption. He is making sure everything will work out for this and I'm happy for that.

When we take upon ourselves the name of Jesus Christ at baptism, every decision we make is in His name so im trying to just always do all according to His will and humble myself.. I know I had a lot of pride before the mission and slowly I'm trying to get rid of it. I found the balance mom between pride and confidence. Pride is believing you can do everything by yourself or without the help of God and confidence is knowing that the Lord can use you as His instrument to bring about much good. I know that as I keep my covenants and follow the Spirit I will not make a wrong choice because I'm following the Lord. thats my goal.

Well for me things are going pretty well! The work continues to push forward. we have 2 more baptisms for this coming Sunday!! it's awesome! The Lord is just blessing us like crazy. As well, we are finding just a lot of people! It's awesome how much the Lord is blessing us... I love it! Since Sunday nothing real crazy has happened. We just keep pushing forward with faith and the Lord blesses us. We are just sooo busy! We are booked like every day we barely have any time to tract, which is the way its supposed to be so thats good. Well, thats about it for me right now.

Hi Mom,

So this week was pretty crazy haha. It has been HOTTTTT!!!! Like 100 degrees almost every day. I've been sweating non stop from being in the sun all day haha. Also our area is bike/car so more or less we have to bike a lot since were only alloted 500 miles a month. Our apartment is roasting too haha... man I dont like the heat! This week we also set two more baptismal dates so right now we have 4 dates! Yeah were cooking here... physically and spiritually hahaha. We have run into quite a few characters this week too. One guy, Aj (stands for all jesus) was pretty funny. He ordered from us a bible so we came by to give it to him. When we met him he was all exited and was asking us to say a prayer with him so we all held hands and he started speaking, but when he was talking he was talking at like 100 miles an hour! I swear this guy coulda been a good auctionier haha. So he finished then he started just preaching to us. Literally haha I have never seen so many bible quotations in my life. Every other sentence was a scripture passage! Then he was like "Hey I made a song about Jesus" and he started singing this interesting song where in between every sentence he would whisper in a "thank you Jesus" haha. Really he was just exited about Jesus, or he had it all staged, but more or less he was a good guy haha. At the end he wanted us to say we are saved, but we explained about the gospel of Jesus Christ and how we have to endure to the end. It actually turned into a good situation. Haha man I hope we can get him baptized that would be awesome! We also just have run into a lot of other interesting people (more or less on drugs), but yeah its been great haha. Oh yeah also I gave a talk in spanish on Sunday! haha yeah I think I did pretty well. I actually got a few good compliments on it so I was pretty proud of myself about that haha. Yeah we are definately speaking a lot of Spanish here and its been good for me!

Our Mighty Missionary!

These are Spencer's shoes. He has worn through 3 pairs of his Sunday shoes walking the streets of Los Angeles...and he is shopping for another pair. I wonder how many miles he has walked trying to share his message? I sure am proud of him :)

Hey mom!!

Hey thank you so much for the update on what’s happening in the ward! Well for this week we actually were able to see the Lords hand! Unfortunately like I said before we have stopped teaching (xxxxx), but where one door closes another opens, or two or three ha-ha. We are teaching a Spanish mom and her son from Guatemala named xxxxx and xxxx, and I think they are ready. she keeps all her commitments and she keeps telling us she wants to go to church. The only problem is we have some difficulty consistently contacting them, but it will be good. She is reading the book of Mormon and committed that she would pray. If she has real intent she will receive an answer. One time after I had prayed she explained to us how she felt a warmth in her heart and I told her "es el Espiritu Santo" which means it’s the Holy Ghost. I really feel good about her.

As well with them, we have re-contacted a lady named xxxxx who was a former investigator. When we came over we stayed for quite a while answering her and her husband’s questions. They then fed us dinner ha-ha. She really wants to go to church as well, but the problem is her husband is a little more closed to the idea, but both are fairly interested and we will definitely see where it goes.

Finally we have one more lead. Two days ago during nightly planning (we take 30 minutes every night to plan the next day) my companion and I were prompted to go to a members home we hardly knew. we really didn’t know why either, but for the past couple of weeks we both felt we needed to, so we set up a time the next day to go. So the next day we get there and we find out that this member is REALLY good friends with a less-active/part-member family we have been working with a little. They gave us a truck load of information and on top of that we found out that her children are not baptized!! So now we are going to go over there and ask if we can teach her children. On top of that the less actives non-member husband is at a scout camp with hundreds of LDS and a general authority so he may have his heart softened. It looks like the Lord is working here... I’m especially exited for this ha-ha.

Spencer...Happy 1 year Anniversary!!!

One Year ago in the Missionary Training Center: Provo, UT

Last week, in Manhattan Beach, California

I miss my boy...it's a guilty feeling, because he is serving the Lord and I know he is where I want him to be and where the Lord wants him to be. To get past these feelings I remind myself how proud I am of him; my barely 19 year old boy who we drove to Provo, Utah, where we dropped him off knowing we would not see him for two years. He learned in two short months how to be a polite missionary, how to speak another language, and how to devote the next two years of his life to God...He is no longer a boy, but a strapping, handsome, obedient, honest, and honorable man. He has given his will to the Lord who in turn has molded him and directed him to those that are lowly in heart, and need comfort and love. It's so amazing to witness the change that comes about when we are selfless and only concentrate on others well being.

I wish I could have served a mission, I take comfort in the fact that I have raised a better person than I was able to be. Spencer I love you...it's been wonderful to watch you grow and progress. I recall the words you mailed me early in your mission, " The Lord doesn't expect perfection, only progression." Thanks for your service and example. We have all been blessed because of it. Love Mommy! ( He won't see this for another year, but I use it as a family journal, and my backup memory. )

so yeah the XXXX's told me that they sent you those pics! actually that is the family that i was talking about last week.? yeah thats him! haha he is a really neat guy! im glad it got to you :) so no i did not get that suit from them (that is actually them too), but i did get a tie it was nice! oh and we are living in a small house that was given to the church by a member. its really old like i said, but its nice. its not an apartment so thats cool. So it sounds like your 4th was good! that is awesome! yeah i remember last year we went to the Lewis' house for the 4th... i think that was last year i cant remember haha. and yeah thank you so much for the camera! im exited to recieve it and start taking some pics! i cant believe my one year is coming up! its next week!! haha that is so crazy...

well as for me not too many stories this week. we were teaching a born again catholic jew named Andrea on Wednesday and boy that was crazy haha we have been teaching her for 3 weeks, but i dunno if she is going anywhere. we brought a member with us to that lesson, but that made the situation a little bit harder. she would bring up deep doctrine with Andrea concerning (we were teaching the 2nd lesson) the war in heaven and Heavenly Mother. ahh!! haha, but it still turned out to be a good lesson thankfully. We have also been teaching another lady named Bonnie and thats been ok, but it still has its tweaks in it. haha oh well we will just keep teaching people! The 4th was pretty good i guess haha. we tracted a lot on that day and also just tried to visit families until about 6 o clock then we had an activity where we played soccer and made smores. it was pretty fun actually! Later that night Elder Mcdonald and I got on the roof and tried to watch fireworks, but good luck in Manhattan Beach. they are SUPER strict on fireworks here, so all we could see in the distance were glances of fireworks in another city and thunderings all around, but it was great nonetheless. i made the realization that being an american is awesome because of our freedom of religion! i love being an american! haha.

Spencer is a young man with great faith!

I am such a blessed mom. Spencer is such a great kid, I don't know what I did to deserve such a sweet spirit. I have been so worried about Spencer since I heard he was on a bike in an area with many hills. Because he is diabetic this is a health risk for him, when he exercises his blood sugars drop and he could go into a coma if not treated quickly. I have been praying for him and his health, and am so grateful Heavenly Father hears and answers our prayers. Read Spencer's letter to me below.



Hi Mom,

Well as for me my week was pretty good. We ran into this muslim guy last week and wow he is pretty cool. His dad was just baptized not too long ago and he wants to learn more about where he came from ; why he is here; and where we are going. 3 questions we can answer haha.
We also got a car! it was a pretty spiritual experience. Monday we had to bike all the way to an appointment down by the beach which was really far for us and basically it turned out to be a waste of time and a waste of energy. We had to bike over like a million different hills and one massive hill of death and when we finally got there she wasn't home!
So we biked all the way over another massive hill of pain to another person and they weren't home. Then I went low, but luckily I had a muffin to eat that we recieved that very day... so I ate that. Anyway after that it was far to late to do anything else so we biked over all the hills and the 2 massive steep hills of death back to our home... waste of time.
So that night i asked Heavenly Father if we need a car and I kid you not; the very next day our AP's call and ask us if we want a car. We both said yes haha. Our prayer was answered! haha it was cool. The Lord is definately looking out for us.

Anyway it was a good week,tough, but good. This area is just a little tougher than any other area I have had, but I know the Lord will provide. Anyway mom that's about it for me! I love you and miss you mom! take care!

Hey sis!
Hey i am happy to hear everything went so well at Sunlakes and you had a blast! that's great! how was Silverwood? any crazy stories? how was jamie and all them? that's awesome that you got 2nd place... good job! well, sorry for not writing on Monday, but as you probably guessed i got transferred again after just one transfer too! now i am in Manhattan Beach! BEACH FRONT!!! haha does'nt really mean anything though its just a little cooler. not only am i now here, but well first of all we are all bike in this area (and that's killer because there are hills EVERYWHERE really steep ones too!) on top of that i am now senior companion so i am in charge of everything in this area! At first there was a lot to get caught up on, but as this week has gone, we have caught up. everyone says this area is really hard because there are a lot of rich people around here. its been interesting, but i know that as long as i do everything i can the Lord will provide and he has! we have been finding people to teach through tracking and that never happens! its been a miracle. also there are a lot of "dry Mormons" around here who are interested in hearing us out so yeah the work continues! this is a great learning experience for me. there is absolutely nobody giving me advice in this area and i didn't know anything, but as i have relied on the Lord and worked hard this area has been coming alive. Its been great, well, everything but the biking haha. i hate it! anyway today was temple p day so.. WOAH it just thundered here in LA!!! haha that's really rare.. anyway yeah its temple p day and that's why i didn't email on Monday, but yeah a lot of change! my new companion is elder Mcdonald and yeah he is a cool guy! were gonna tear it up in this area! well that's about it for right now. i love and i miss you sis!! you take care and write back soon!!Elder Flitton

Practically Perfect...

Practically perfect. Well that is our life right now. I got an update from Spencer and he is fantastic. It just warms my heart and melts my hurts when I know my kids are happy. I stopped by a friends house last night for a signature on some medical forms for our adoption. I intended it to be a quick stop. Two hours later, my heart was full and my thirst was quenched. They offered me a drink and to sit with them. Who could resist. I love my circle of friends. They are my rock. I am surrounded by diverse, intelligent, humble, kind people. So thanks for the soda and the visit last night, you have touched my life in such a meaningful way... one thing she noticed is how our family is being so blessed since Spencer left for his mission...and I could not agree more !

thanks for writing im glad everything is going well with the family! everything is going really well for me too! people are falling straight out of the air for us to teach! the Lord is really working miracles in our area. we had a baptism on saturday! it was really awesome! our mission president came and that was a little nerve racking, but it really went well! our missionary moment (spiritual thought ) was awesome! the Spirit was so strong and everybody felt it. it was cool too because we werent 100 percent ready yet and i was a little nervous we might mess up so i said a little prayer and got a very comforting feeling that all was going to be well then we did it and the Spirit took over! i remember bearing me testimony about how i was converted to Christ through the Book of Mormon and yeah it was just very awesome to be guided by the Spirit. i have been learning so many things on points of doctrine. i love studies haha its great. like i found out this cool thing about truth and how lacking wisdom is lacking truth and i found a bridge and yeah! I connected it with Moronis promise it was awesome what i found! the ultimate key to finding truth in this life! haha ive been sharing it with people and its sweet! anyway mom i am doing pretty well! i am almost on my last box for site changes, but tats about it! i love it out here! man its good! i love you and miss you tons mom! thanks for everything you do!
